LEAD STORY

Microsoft takes new tack on Java | News: CNET

Be on the lookout for Visual J#.Net. Microsoft will take a test
version of this tool out of the Redmond shed this week. The tool is
bait to lure Java developers over to .Net. It will let programmers
use Java to write code that works only with .Net -- no standalone
Java app building allowed. That fact should help MS dodge licensing
issues with Sun.

THE MISSING LINK | In stores soon -- floating product ads?

Wal-Mart meets the Jetsons with a dash of "Ghostbusters" to boot.
Holomedia, a joint American/Hungarian venture has come up with a way
to turn ads into apparitions. The firm has cranked out a gadget that
can project still or moving pictures in such a way that they seem to
float in mid-air. Stores would use the device to float product ads
out on the sales floor. Just imagine walking into a store and seeing
a giant can of potted meat floating in front of you. Maybe you'd
prefer to see a ghost!
