Microsoft has put out a patch to caulk critical flaws in XP's Universal Plug and Play service. The flaws could let an intruder take over a system or trigger a DoS attack. FBI officials say users should install the patch and disable the UPnP service. The agency also advised systems administrators to monitor and block ports 1900 and 5000. An increase in traffic on those ports could indicate that intruders are scanning for the vulnerabilities, the NIPC said. Administrators also should have a policy in place that restricts access to the corporate network to systems that aren't patched yet, the agency advised. Users of Windows 98, 98SE or ME also should apply the patch if UPnP is installed and running on their systems, Microsoft said. The vulnerabilities were discovered by eEye Digital Security, Aliso Viejo, Calif. The firm said it found three security holes in UPnP, the most serious being a remotely exploitable buffer overflow that allows an attacker to gain system-level access. The other two vulnerabilities can lead to denial-of-service attacks, the company said. http://www.crn.com/sections/BreakingNews/dailyarchives.asp?ArticleID=32282 FOR MORE INFORMATION: Check out our Featured Topic on XP at http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/featuredTopic/0,290042,sid1_gci778142,00.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= OTHER STORIES In addition to the headlines below, others are available on our news page. >> Full Stories: http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/news =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= MICROSOFT WARNS OF HOLES IN SQL SERVER | News: IDG News Two holes have turned up in SQL Server. Silicon Valley is "weed central"! Santa Clara County, which holds the valley, had more pot plants seized than any other California county but one. And you thought just the cost of living was high! So are developers so stressed over software that they're toking up in droves? You can roll your own conclusion, but state officials say the fact that marijuana is grown in Santa Clara County doesn't mean that the product ends up being used there.
