LEAD STORY

SEEKER TROJAN EXPLOITS OLD MICROSOFT FLAW | News: searchSecurity

Microsoft may take some heat on the security front, but when Redmond
does something right, like issuing a timely patch for a
vulnerability, and IT managers don't plug their systems, the blame
shifts in-house. That's the case with the JS/Seeker-E Trojan
currently in circulation. The Trojan exploits a 14-month-old
Microsoft Virtual Machine hole. Sophos has had several reports of
infected machines, an indication that administrators are lax in their
patching.

FBI REVISES WINDOWS XP SECURITY ALERT | News: Computerworld

The FBI has backed off its recommendation that XP users disable the
universal plug-and-play (UPNP) service. Doing so would keep hackers
out of a security hole. Now the feds are telling users to install the
Microsoft-issued patch -- that should be enough to protect their
systems.

MS SECURITY PATCH OPENS NEW HOLE | News: ZDNet

An Internet Explorer patch has become a fresh IE problem. A new hole
has popped up in patched versions of IE 5.5 and 6.0. The hole could
let a hacker execute malicious code.

1901 census site closed for urgent repairs | The Missing Link

Newsflash! The descendants have descended in droves. The 1901 census
that the British government put online this week has taken more hits
than Mike Tyson. And like a wounded boxer, www.census.pro.gov.uk has
gone to the corner for a cold splash of water and a quick rubdown.
The site had to come offline for some emergency repairs thanks to the
one million plus people who tried to log on at the same time. Must be
something in their genes! The site should be back up and running by
Friday. Tally-ho!
