LEAD STORY

SUMMIT: MS SETTING PACE IN WEB SERVICES SPACE | News: ENT Magazine

One analyst firm is sold on Microsoft when it comes to Web services.
Summit Strategies reports that the .NET plan is the lead horse in the
Web services race. Why is MS casting a shadow over the likes of IBM
and Sun? Summit analysts think the release candidate of Visual Studio
.NET and the fact that developers have really taken to it, have
thrust Redmond ahead of the pack.

MS INVESTIGATING ALLEGED FLAW IN IE BROWSER | News: Computerworld

Microsoft says it is taking a hard look at a reported flaw in IE
Versions 5.5 and 6. The flaws could let attackers parody real Web
sites, pilfer content from browser cookies and get into certain types
of files on a victim's system. Microsoft says it is worried that the
report, released by a security watchdog group, went public before
they had time to investigate.

NIPC GAVE USERS WRONG ADVICE ON XP VULNERABILITY | News: ENT Magazine

Why did the FBI back off its admonition to unplug the Universal Plug
and Play Device Host service in Windows XP? Because the G-men were
wrong. That service had nothing to do with the Universal Plug and
Play vulnerability that made headlines. Microsoft's most recent
bulletin tries to make that clear.

CENSUS SITE SHUTS FOR A WEEK | The Missing Link

So many Brits, so many hits. That 1901 British census Web site
appears to be more popular than the Beatles and Tom Jones combined.
The U.K. Public Records Office (PRO) has been forced to shut down the
site for at least a week to make improvements. Right now, the site
just can't handle the load. The PRO had previously thought the
overhaul would only take a few hours. Boy were they wrong! Now
they're all humming the same Beatles tune -- "Help!" This is the last
story about the census saga -- we promise!
