LEAD STORY

GATES MAKES SECURITY TOP FOCUS | News: Mercury News

Bill Gates announced that Microsoft is going to make security and
privacy its top priorities. He has challenged his employees to change
their mindsets when they develop products and start working within
the context of security instead of innovation. Security experts have
challenged Microsoft to put those words into action. Indeed, the
company's future could depend on it.

MICROSOFT FALLING BEHIND IN BROWSER SECURITY FIXES | News: Newsbytes

Microsoft may have released the "mother of all IE patches" last
month, but security experts say that's not enough -- nine bugs have
cropped up in Internet Explorer since the patch came out last month.
The experts are even more miffed that Microsoft hasn't even
acknowledged the bugs' existence, much less tried to fix them.

MS EXEC PLEDGES INTEROPERABILITY, EVEN WITH LIBERTY | News: IDG News

Is this a Microsoft that plays well with others? The company's Senior
Vice President of Platforms and Development told an audience this
week that the company has a new development philosophy, part of which
focuses on working with, not against, industry-standard software used
by other vendors. MS also wants to make its Passport authentication
engine work with the competing Liberty Alliance to create a common
technology for authenticating users on the Internet.

POSSIBLE TO SET UP WIN2K SERVER AS BDC ON NT4 PDC? | Ask the Expert

Dear Expert,
I continue to get conflicting information about setting up a Win2k
server as a backup domain controller (BDC) on NT4 primary domain
controller (PDC). I have read all the notes that say you can't do it,
but still some references say that it is possible. Could you let me
know if someone has overcome the Microsoft usual limitations for
cross platform compatibility for continuing to use NT4?

SHOPPING CENTER SILENCES ABUSIVE SCALES | The Missing Link

Talk about a lean, mean, weighin' machine! A smart scale in Australia
gave people a real pounding, at least emotionally. The scale not only
measured height and weight, it also "weighed in" with some heavily
harsh words. One woman got on the scale and came off with a
computerized printout that said "Get off fat pig!" Another man, who
weighs only 176 pounds, was told "You are a little overweight. Fat
%#$@." That's not the kind of warm and fuzzy Richard Simmonsesque
motivation these people expected. So, the scale's been removed.
Company officials think someone "made the scale do it" because it
normally says stuff like "Happy New Year."
