LEAD STORY

SERVER DATABASES CLASH | News: eWEEK

EWEEK Labs ran a bunch of database products through the benchmark
ringer: DB2 7.2 with FixPack 5, SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
with Service Pack 2, MySQL 4.0.1 Max, Oracle9i Enterprise Edition
9.0.1.1.1 and Sybase's ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise) 12.5.0.1.
Testers found Oracle9i and MySQL had the best performance and
scalability. SQL Server and MySQL were the easiest to tune -- 9i was
the hardest to tune.

MICROSOFT "AMBASSADOR" CALLS IT QUITS | News: CNET

Linda Stone is leaving Microsoft after less than two years as a
company ombudsman. She's the one who tried to soothe sometimes
rancorous relations between Redmond and Silicon Valley. Stone and
Steve Ballmer reportedly didn't see eye to eye on company/customer
issues, although Ballmer has praised Stone's accomplishments.

EXPERT APPOINTED TO REVIEW WINDOWS SOURCE CODE | News: Wininformant

A professor at the University of Utah's School of Computing has the
honor of looking at the Windows source code. The judge in the
antitrust case appointed Lee A. Hollaar to find out if Microsoft
really can't "unbundle" Windows, as it claims. Hollaar will put the
latest Windows releases, including XP Home and Professional Editions
and XP Embedded, under the microscope.

DANISH GOVT. REBELS AGAINST MS LICENSE TERMS | News: The Register

Something stinks in Denmark -- it's the stink some Danes are making
over Microsoft's license terms. Several government IT workers say the
proposed 30% price hike for Windows 2000 and Office 2000 licenses
does not make financial sense to them -- they're looking at open
source alternatives in an effort to save money.

OOPS! TRUE IT STORY #8 | News: searchWindowsManageability

"Clueless" could be the subtitle for this blooper about a user, a
firewall, and a missing link.

E-MAIL PRANKS MAY SCARE OFF USERS | The Missing Link

Could a game of strip poker scare the pants off e-mail users? One
psychologist thinks it's in the cards. Last week a British man's
supposedly private game turned into a global "peekfest," as pictures
of him stretched far beyond their intended e-recipients and landed as
far away as Australia and Singapore. A psychologist in Manchester
predicts incidents like these will strip e-mail of its popularity as
an informal medium. The theory is that people will be more afraid of
their private info (or in this case, their private parts!) getting
into public hands. He thinks this could mean the phone call (gasp)
may make a comeback!
