LEAD STORY

MICROSOFT OVERHAULING FILES FOR NEXT WINDOWS | News: ZDNet

Looking for information in Windows has always been somewhat of a
headache, but the next version of the OS will have the ibuprofen IT
needs to make this pain go away. Microsoft is creating new file
organization software that should make finding and working with
stored information a lot easier. The new data store should appear
with test versions of the next Windows (code-named Longhorn) sometime
in 2003.

BUFFER OVERFLOW OPENS WINDOWS | News: vnunet

Want to let a total stranger assume your identity, take over your
computer, add or erase files, and even reformat your hard drive? A
Windows vulnerability can make it happen. Security experts say an
unchecked buffer in the Windows shell can lead to attackers running
malicious code with privileges of the logged-in user. Microsoft has
issued a patch. (Click below for a link to the patch.)

MICROSOFT TO RELEASE MORE SOURCE CODE | News: eWEEK

Microsoft must be in a generous mood -- the company will be sharing
more code. Redmond plans to release the Server Message Block (SMB)
protocol this summer, as per the proposed antitrust settlement. The
company also announced this week it would license the core Common
Internet File System (CIFS) protocol -- that move is basically to
appease antitrust investigators in Europe.

WEBSENSE WARNS AGAINST "MARCH MADNESS" | The Missing Link

Party pooper alert! Websense, a company that gets paid to make
offices run more efficiently, estimates that March Madness (aka the
NCAA basketball tournament) will cost U.S. companies more than $500
million in lost productivity. Evidently the time employees spend
checking hoops scores and updating their brackets is time they could
be scoring for the company. Websense is telling its customers to
beware of the tourney and the possibility that illegal betting could
be going on between the cubicles. The office, after all, is no place
for fun!
