LEAD STORY

MICROSOFT'S BORROWED CODE MAY POSE RISK | News: CNET

Remember we said earlier this week that there was some security news
that DIDN'T involve Microsoft? Well, we're gonna have to take it
back! The vulnerability discovered in Linux's zlib
software-compression library could possibly affect Microsoft products
that use the same code -- products like Office, IE, DirectX,
Messenger and FrontPage. Nothing confirmed yet -- MS says it's
investigating.

AIR FORCE ORDERS TO MS: IMPROVE SECURITY | News: InformationWeek

The U.S. Air Force is firing some shots at Microsoft, telling the
company to tighten the locks on its products. The USAF's CIO says IT
security is also national security -- and that his branch is spending
more money finding, patching and fixing vulnerabilities than it paid
for the software. Microsoft is the Air Force's biggest IT supplier.

NEW JDBC DRIVERS LINK XML TO SQL | News: ZDNet

DataDirect wants to connect your J2EE apps to your relational
database. To that end, the company has some new drivers on the
market. DataDirect Connect JDBC 3.0 helps translate between

FROM ABBA TO IT? | The Missing Link

If you're still associating Sweden with ABBA, Volvo, pancake piles,
Pippi Longstocking, pornography and Ann-Margret's birthplace, get
with the times! Sweden's leadin'! This slice of Scandinavia is where
IT's at, according to IDC. Researchers say Sweden has the best
information economy on earth. The top ranking is based on the
nation's killer IT infrastructure, sweet educational systems, smart
nurturing of IT business growth, cheap and widely-available broadband
service, and Net-savvy citizenry. Maybe ABBA should remix one of
their old hits to celebrate -- call it "Dancing Geek." Norway iced
the number two spot, Switzerland peaked at number three, the U.S. was
fourth and Denmark fifth.
