U.S. MILITARY SCOURS WINDOWS FOR HACKER BACK DOORS | News: Newsbytes

The U.S. Army and Navy are on a different kind of search and destroy
mission. Computer administrators have been ordered to scan their
Windows systems for the RemotelyAnywhere software program, a program
military officials say could let attackers "scan, probe, and
compromise additional DOD (Department of Defense) systems." Evidently
some "cracked" copies of the software have turned up on DOD systems.

25 STATES UNITE TO FIGHT MICROSOFT MOTION | News: CNET

Twenty-five states have joined the nine dissenting states to urge the
antitrust case judge to ignore Microsoft's request to throw out
what's left of the case. Microsoft wants to settle and be done with
it, but the 34 states say the law allows them to press a case even if
the feds want to settle it. The states want stiffer sanctions against
Microsoft than what's mapped out in the settlement. Remedy hearings
start this week -- they could drag on for two months!

SPAM WEEK COOKS UP OLD MEMORIES | The Missing Link

Spam. You don't have to remind the 2,000 members of Britain's Spam
fan club that it was in the lunchbox long before the inbox. Yes, fan
club. They're celebrating National Spam Week this week, reveling in
the maligned "meat's" glory days -- days when you'd gladly eat it,
not gladly delete it. To them and many Britons, Spam inspires
nostalgia instead of nausea -- not only did many a British schoolkid
grow up eating Spam, but the little can of processed protein also
helped fell the Third Reich by fueling Allied troops and sustaining
civilians. It also made one heckuva hilarious Monty Python skit. Spam
was reborn in 1994 as a name for junk e-mail, but fans of the cans
hope the meaty memories will keep forever.
