LEAD STORY

"MICROSOFT" E-MAIL TROJAN HARVESTS NEW VICTIMS | News: Newsbytes

The W32/Gibe mass-mailing worm may be a monster failure, but security
experts say it has succeeded in one area. It's the first worm to
exploit e-mail addresses of potential victims from online
directories. That makes Gibe a potential precedent-setting pioneer --
its directory harvesting prowess could open up a whole new can of
worms -- future worms could use the same technique to engulf the
Internet.

SECURING ACTIVE DIRECTORY | News: SearchWindowsManageability

With Active Directory, if it's not one thing, it's another. Deploying
and managing Active Directory are tough tasks, but securing it can be
tougher. Here are some AD security tips that will help ease the
burden.

NOVELL LINES UP XML NETMAIL SERVER, HAWTHORNE GROUPWISE | News: CRN

There's a change brewing at Novell. The company's Internet Messaging
Server, or NIMS, will be rechristened Novell NetMail. But there will
be more to it than just a new name. Next month Novell will load it
with support for Windows, XML, and a SOAP layer to enable the
messaging server for Web services.

SUN TO BANG JAVA DRUM BUT J2EE 1.4 SLIPS | News: The Register

JavaOne may be a horn-tooting extravaganza for Sun, but behind the
hoopla is a little reality. J2EE 1.4 won't be getting native support
for SOAP until next year. That could set back Java programmers
itching to build Web services and cost Sun some mindshare to
Microsoft. .NET developers are already building Web services now that
Visual Studio.NET is out.

FORMER NETSCAPE CEO TO TESTIFY AGAINST MS | News: Computerworld

A little payback maybe? James Barksdale, former head of Netscape, has
testified in the antitrust case on behalf of the nine states wanting
stiffer penalties against Redmond. Barksdale blamed Microsoft for
Netscape Navigator's trip to the browser basement. He thinks tougher
sanctions are needed to keep MS from destroying other companies. He
says the settlement doesn't stop MS from bundling applications and
operating system code.

GEEKS MAKE HASH OF HIGH-TECH IBONG | The Missing Link

Two dudes deep in the heart of Texas are high on their Mac. So what,
you say, gaggles of geeks are high on their Macs. These guys are
guaranteed higher. In fact, they're high FROM their Mac. They've
turned it into a bong! That's stonerspeak for a water pipe used to
smoke marijuana (rent a Cheech and Chong movie if you'd like to learn
more). How did they do it? It took some installation and lots of
inhalation. The guys added a large tube to the back of an all-in-one
Mac SE30, a bowl to the front and the water bong behind the screen.
They call their smokin' little gadget the "iBong" -- it's the only
Mac that'll give you the munchies. They say they got the idea from
the MacQuarium Macintosh modification, which turns an all-in-one Mac
into a fish tank.
