LEAD STORY

JAVA BREWERS: WE WON'T BOW TO MICROSOFT | News: ZDNet

Microsoft will be on the minds of many at Moscone Center. The JavaOne
conference is this week in San Francisco, and Java software makers
will be pushing hard to catch up with Microsoft in the Web services
market. A delayed update to the Java 2 Enterprise Edition standard
validates the perception that Java software makers aren't hitting the
Web services market as vigilantly as MS.

GAME SHOW GLITCH DISAPPOINTS NEW MILLIONAIRE | The Missing Link

Lertrak Panjanawaporn of Thailand lost her fortune a lot faster than
Hammer or Vanilla Ice lost theirs. The 44-year-old street peddler got
on the Thai version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," and her final
answers were all right -- she won one million baht. But, the bundle
of baht was not to be. Her fortune quickly turned to misfortune when
the show's organizers realized she had the mother of all lifelines.
Evidently, technicians got some wires crossed, and the computer
monitor she was looking at not only had the questions, it had the
answers too, highlighted in green. They had to do the show over again
-- she won 25,000 baht in the replay.
