NT/2000 HOLE CAN LET ATTACKER TAKE OVER SYSTEMS | News: IDG News

A patch is in the works for another flaw with Win2k and NT. Entercept
Security Technologies Inc. claims it found a weakness in the software
debugging component of the two OSes. The weakness can let an attacker
upgrade his or her privileges and commandeer the system. Microsoft is
investigating, and wishes Entercept had held its tongue until said
investigation was complete.

MICROSOFT OFFERS FIX FOR TWO IE SECURITY HOLES | News: IDG News

It's patch time again! Microsoft has released one patch to caulk two
critical flaws with Internet Explorer. One flaw could result in

UNISYS, MICROSOFT TO LAUNCH ANTI-UNIX ADS | News: CNET

It's a dual dissing of Unix -- Microsoft and Unisys are teaming up on
a sales and marketing campaign designed to get Unix users out of
"their trap." The campaign will pitch Unisys' high-end server and
Microsoft's top-end version of Windows as a more flexible and
cost-efficient alternative to Unix systems. Sun's response to this?
Paraphrased and in a nutshell: "Microsoft should stay on the porch
because it can't run with us in the data center."

MICROSOFT 64-BIT SQL SERVER GETS CLOSER | News: CRN

Here's one bit of news on the 64-bit version of SQL Server,
code-named Liberty: More than one thousand beta testers are tinkering
with it now. This speedy database specializes in decision-support,
data-mining and other applications. Microsoft hopes the 64-bit
product paired with the Windows .NET operating system, will be the
action that speaks louder than the words in Microsoft's anti-Unix
campaign.

OXFORD ONLINE: WILL PEOPLE PAY? | The Missing Link

Wanna see the definition of "expensive?" Check out
oxfordreference.com. Oxford University Press is putting its core
language and subject reference dictionaries online. You know, those
tall, thick, heavy books that come with a magnifier and have the last
word on words -- they're going on the Web. It's the future of
reference, but, with the apologies to Oxford's wordsmiths, it ain't
cheap. Yearly subscription fees will cost around $250 a year for
schools and anywhere from $395 to just under $3,000 for multiple-user
accounts like libraries.
