LEAD STORY

MICROSOFT TRIAL SHIFTS TO ENTERPRISE CONCERNS | News: Computerworld

Execs from Red Hat Linux and Novell have taken the stand these last
few days, and their testimonies show how corporate IT issues are
taking the stage in the remedy hearings. The judge is hearing all
about the Windows interoperability headaches and how the right remedy
should lead to better server integration and desktop competition. The
two execs back the remedy proposed by the nine dissenting states -- a
remedy that would let Novell and other firms see Microsoft's source
code.

AT MICROSOFT, SECURITY TRUMPS APP COMPATIBILITY | News: eWEEK

User experience usually has come first with Microsoft, but the
company is pushing usability and legacy application compatibility
back down the priority list and moving security to the top of the
development chain. Executives also hinted that Microsoft will begin
developing its own security software. Some users, however, aren't on
board saying that security should not come at the expense of backward
compatibility.

CODEWEAVERS RUNS OFFICE WITHOUT WINDOWS | News: InfoWorld

For anyone who wants Microsoft Office but doesn't want Microsoft
Windows, a company called Codeweavers has something looming --
CrossOver Office. The software lets corporate users run Office or
Lotus Notes without Windows, a Windows license and without a Windows
emulator. CrossOver is ready now for Office 97 and Office 2000.
Support for Office XP is just down the road.

HIGH-PROFILE ANTI-UNIX SITE RUNS UNIX | News: CNET

Is this high tech hypocrisy, IT irony, or both? Remember that news
story about Microsoft and Unisys teaming up on an anti-Unix campaign?
Their Web site, called "We have the way out," is supposed to tell
long-suffering Unix users how to get out of their "trap" and jump
through the "window" to freedom. Netcraft found out that the Web site
runs on FreeBSD, an open-source version of Unix, along with the
Unix-based Web server Apache.

MOVE THE KIDS AWAY FROM THE SCREEN, PLEASE | The Missing Link

OK, so maybe your mug won't really freeze when you're making that
horrid face, and maybe eating cookie dough won't give you worms. But
mom may have been right about that other warning -- standing too
close to the TV. A recent study of children found a link between time
spent in front of a computer screen and vision problems. Researchers
say pixel preoccupation can be really hazardous to kids these days
because they start using computers when they're so young, plus they
don't really know the warning signs of vision problems, like
headache, eye fatigue and blurry vision. Good call, ma!
