At Microsoft's TechEd conference last week I had an interesting chat with two IT pros. They shared some of their major IT-related beefs and just how real they felt the .NET momentum is.

One major complaint was that, even though IT systems were designed to simplify tasks -- take the simple example of the Apple II for word processing -- they don't always make life easier. "Things never quite work right," said Susan Nash, Information Systems Specialist. Nash also wishes deploying new applications on Web-based client servers would take her a few weeks NOT a few months. Further, why does training, Nash wondered, always take much longer than anticipated?

Meanwhile, the University of Colorado is waiting to see how quickly .NET explodes onto the scene before changing its class roster. It depends on how quickly the businesses where most students are placed to work after graduation change to .NET, said Steven Walczak, an associate professor of IT. Once they do, the college will begin teaching .NET. This year the college is keeping its C++ classes, but he expects by the fall of 2003, it will adapt existing courses to a .NET-centric theme. "We need to be ready, though," said Walczak, "in case it happens sooner."

What's on your mind lately? Are you contemplating how much .NET and Web services could work for your company, or are you stuck in the daily meanderings of trying to get your IT system working well?

"I have an environment in which users log on from many different locations. I would like to have their "apps" drive mapped dynamically to a server on the same subnet as the machine they are logged on to. Can I do this with a login script or something else? They are using Win2000 Pro desktops in an NT 4.0 domain that will be converted to Win2000 AD later."
