LEAD STORY

AD: SCARY FOR SOME, A CINCH FOR OTHERS | News: SearchWin2000

Active Directory has been more like "Inactive Directory" for the last
couple of years, but that's starting to change. Judging from the
results of an exclusive SearchWin2000 survey, more enterprises seem
to be taking a deep breath and jumping in, although many smaller
companies are still either hesitating at the edge of the diving
board, or staying away from the deep end entirely. Why? Because
getting with this program requires planning -- and planning requires
resources that the smaller guys and gals just don't have.

GARTNER: IBM, MS GAIN AGAINST ORACLE IN DATABASE MARKET | News: CRN

Gartner researchers crunched some numbers and concluded that IBM was
the database market share champ in 2001. Big Blue's acquisition of
Informix helped push it to the top of the heap. Microsoft's share
rose about 18% last year -- these numbers feed the perception that
Oracle is taking a lot of punches in the database ring.

OLD MS .DOC BUG HIBERNATES ON THE NET | News: ZDNet

Officials at Google say there are more than a half million
downloadable MS Word .doc files on the Web -- files that are old
enough to be leaky in terms of security. A four year-old bug that
pushes random bits of data from deleted files into areas of an
undeleted document might have infected those files. If someone
downloads an infected file, they may be able to see old passwords,
documents or anything else from your computer you don't want them to
see. Some classified government info could be at risk.

OOPS! TRUE IT BLOOPER #27 | Quick Hit of the Day

IT manager Larry Bolhuis returned to work for a former employer with
few qualms. After all, he'd set up the systems there and left them
running like a well-oiled machine. Little did he know that, in his
absence, the IT department had descended into that dark netherworld
of network no-nos called The Blooper Zone.

"SPIDEY" ALREADY BEING SWAPPED BY ONLINE PIRATES | The Missing Link

It didn't take long for Spiderman to get tangled in someone else's
Web. The itsy bitsy blockbuster, which opened this past weekend, is
already turning into Internet booty, as pirates armed with cameras
hit the high cinemas. It's just like that "Seinfeld" episode -- flick
filchers simply sneak video cameras into theaters and let the tapes
roll. Pirated copies of "Spiderman" have been weaving their way to
the Internet file trading posts of EDonkey, Kazaa and Morpheus.
Freeloading downloaders might be better off just going to the theater
-- some copies of the film are more than 2 gigabytes.
