It's hard for companies to excel at the business of customer service but for those who do it right, the reward in customer loyalty is huge. Companies like Dell Computer Inc., Southwest Airlines and American Express are famous for their attention to detail and customer focus. Why can't Microsoft do at least as well?

A company that is truly customer focused makes the customer a priority within every aspect of a business, with employees in every level, in every department. It's crucial that they recognize that this is not just something the sales team needs to be aware.

You've told us that Microsoft is way off the mark when it comes to making its customers happy. The deja vu feeling that comes from applying frequent patches to a Web server or being forced into an expensive licensing program, only creates animosity. Technology aside, we've heard customers complain that there is a pervasive lack of people skills throughout the company and there is no one to talk to when they run into a problem.

What are some of the most basic things that Microsoft could or should be doing to make itself a more customer-centric company? Drop me a line and let me know.
