LEAD STORY
Gates: .NET won't happen overnight  (eWEEK)
Chairman Gates has charged the net to volley some .NET criticisms. IT has been grousing about Microsoft's lack of .NET details, especially what it will mean to enterprises. Gates said .NET is not something that will happen overnight and that it will be four or five years before it bears fruit. Gates reiterated Microsoft's commitment to XML to exchange information.

NEWS
Microsoft serves up Palladium details (IDG News)
Microsoft's Palladium security initiative has been short on details and long on nebulous thus far, but now the company is letting a few details out of the bag. We now know, for instance, that Palladium means a "trusted space" in a PC that's separate from the OS. A select group of applications and operations can run in that space. It will need a security chip and software rewritten to work with the chip. Palladium will NOT be open source, but shared source, according to MS. Critics suspect Palladium is another game piece in Microsoft's monopoly.

THE MISSING LINK
Yale alleges an ivory tower break-in

Is Princeton guilty of acting less than princely? Should the school be in the Poison Ivy League? The answer depends on if you believe Yale. The Connecticut university has accused Princeton of breaking into its admissions Web site. What was it after? Yale says the Princeton perps wanted to know which high school kids got into Yale, and which ones got shot down. This intrigue sounds like something for the drama department -- not the admissions department. Princeton isn't admitting anything, although the school has suspended a dean of admissions. The FBI is investigating. Maybe this case belongs in the law school.
