LaGrande security to pull Intel into secure future (CRN)
"LaGrande" is the code-name of Intel's new hardware-based security technology. It's a security engine that will be baked into future Intel CPUs and chipsets and should guard data in ways software-based products can't, according to an Intel official. LaGrande, due next year, will fit future Microsoft operating systems and its Palladium plan to make security and privacy components standard equipment in Windows-based PCs.

Office subscription idea bites the dust (eWEEK)
Microsoft started testing a subscription model for Office last year in Australia, Brazil and New Zealand. And that's where the test ends. The company reportedly has decided the subscription route is wrong for selling Office, so the pilot program has ended. Had it been more successful, MS would have gone global with the program.

Greek geeks got game again
;)
Imagine getting tossed in the slammer for elf bowling or checkmating Deep Blue. That kind of justice may sound Greek to you -- and it is! The Greek government's ban on playing computer games in public got a little ludicrous when two Internet cafe owners were charged after police found customers playing online chess (gasp!) and the popular Counter-Strike game. Evidently the ban is a little too broad -- it's intended to crack down on gambling, but it doesn't have a clause to exempt computer games. A judge threw out the charges in the cafe case, saying the ban is unconstitutional.
