Microsoft's MBN B2B software nears beta (eWEEK)
The people in Microsoft's Business Solutions division are almost finished with the first beta of the Microsoft Business Network (MBN) -- that's the company's business-to-business partner-networking software. MBN works like an electronic data interchange network that links suppliers to their customers and offers either HTML or XML avenues of sharing. The beta should be ready next month and the final version is slated for Q1 2003. The Business Solutions division has also cranked out the Microsoft Retail Management System and is almost finished with its Professional Services Automation product.

Microsoft charges ahead with Web services (vnunet)
MapPoint.NET has the distinction of being the first Web service for which Microsoft is charging. The product pretty much does what you'd assume from the name: It tells you how to get there from here. IDC predicts the transaction-based model MS uses to charge for Web services will change.

THE MISSING LINK
One hand on the mouse, one hand on the remote

Remember when you were a kid, and the great challenges were to pat your head and rub your tummy or walk and chew gum at the same time? The 2002 version of those challenges is surfing the Net and surfing TV channels at the same time. According to a new study, more than half of adult Internet users in the U.S. have a TV and PC in the same room, and half of those people watch TV and browse the Net simultaneously. This is proof that the Net won't kill the TV star, but it's definitely competing for your attention.
