SearchWindowsManageability columnist and Vietnam veteran Douglas Paddock earned his stripes as a Microsoft expert the same way he prepared for a career in the military: in boot camp. An IT boot camp, that is. He spent two years at a CTEC. "That's where I learned about pressure in teaching," he said.

The CTEC was Paddock's first gig as a Microsoft Certified Trainer. Most of his classes lasted only one week. Some lasted days. His toughest challenge at MCT boot camp? That would be learning how to quickly explain complex issues into simple terms. "Many people who are technically extremely proficient find they have a very hard time teaching others who are not proficient, or semi-proficient, or sometimes even barely conscious," he said. "We used to go through a lot of people looking for instructors who could do the job and not burn out."

Not only did Paddock not burn out, he got fired up about teaching. He's now guiding IT neophytes through the maze of Microsoft technologies and Louisville Technical Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. In his "spare" time, Paddock has been putting SearchWindowsManageability's readers through their paces. He's put his talent for explaining complex issues well into articles on the ins and outs of browser elections and Microsoft Browser Service.

That's not all. He does webcasts, too. On Nov. 12 he'll tackle the subject of delegating authority in Active Directory in a live webcast.

Until then, you view the archive of his last webcast which offered advice on careers in IT.

    When does this guy rest?
