In Anaheim last week, over 5,000 Windows Enterprise professional gathered for Microsoft Enterprise Conference 2002. The conference mixed a dollop of gee whiz MS technology prognostications with a healthy measure of technical presentations grounded in the here and now -- everything from mobile computing futures a la Microsoft to a collaborative platform roadmap and in-depth practicums on Active Directory, Exchange and security.

But aside from the actual show content, was the news about the future of MEC itself. This year's Anaheim confab will be the last as a stand-alone IT-oriented show. Starting next June, the IT-focused MEC will be merged into Microsoft's developer-oriented Tech-Ed.

For lack of anything more definitive from Redmond, let's just call it Tech-MEC. (It's going to be in Dallas, after all.) The joining of the two shows got a mixed review from the floor of this year's MEC 2002 at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you have an opinion about the change, let me know.
