LEAD STORY
Expert: Admins have to sell the boss on security  (SearchWin2000.com)

SearchWin2000.com expert Roberta Bragg offers some advice on how to make sure your company gets a seat on this important bandwagon.

NEWS
Critics pillory Palladium (vnunet)
A Microsoft "FAQ" paper that details how Palladium will work and what it means to digital rights management and trustworthy computing has drawn the wrath of some critics. One professor in the U.K. has written a rebuttal to Microsoft's document, saying it contains "Clintonesque" language and "several outright lies." Palladium will come with Longhorn.

Bigger companies have the resources and experience to block executable files at the e-mail gateway and to patch vulnerable systems. These precautionary measures have reduced recent worms to little more than a nuisance, experts and users say.

THE MISSING LINK
A site that counts: 1880 U.S. census goes online

If the past is your pastime, you'll need a crowbar to pry yourself away from FamilySearch.org. That's where you'll find the 1880 U.S. census -- the first complete, searchable and free census to go online. You can get on there and find out what your ancestors were doing and where they were doing it long before you were a glimmer in their descendants' eyes. Volunteers with the Mormon Church have been typing their tails off for 17 years to get all the information -- some 50 million entries -- loaded into computers. The site also has the British and Canadian censuses from 1881.
