LEAD STORY
Judge approves MS/DOJ settlement  (Reuters)
The gavel of U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly has come down on the side of Microsoft. She has approved the antitrust settlement and rejected the demands of nine states for harsher punishment. While she did agree that Gates and company tend to downplay the ramifications of their monopolistic ways and show a "paternalistic view" toward consumers, she didn't think the dissenting states' demands "fit the crime," so to speak.

IT admins: Microsoft ruling will have little impact (SearchWin2000.com)
The antitrust settlement has been approved. Now what? How will the decision in Washington affect you at work? Admins, analysts and consultants agree that the judge's ruling won't have much, if any, impact on your job.

NEWS
Expert: MS lost the battles, won the war (Reuters)
Now that the antitrust settlement has gotten a judge's blessing -- let the analyses and fallout begin! Some experts say that approval means Microsoft is even more powerful, that no one can get in the company's way and that Redmond has carte blanche to break down the door into other markets. One business professor says that Microsoft lost all the battles but won the war. But less cynical pundits claim the settlement will ensure that Microsoft plays fairly.

ASK SERDAR YEGULALP
Win2k Pro machines booting with blank screens
Dear Serdar:
When I log on to a Windows NT 4.0 domain, the logon script runs, mapping our shared directories specified on each logon script, as well as our antivirus software, which is updated if needed. On random machines I get a blank screen with a mouse cursor. I can move the mouse cursor, but nothing else loads. Please help me!

PKI/Encryption
Public Key Infrastructure, another great authentication and encryption protocol, can mean big headaches because of the complexity of integration. But the security payoff is well worth the cost of Advil. Read on for our Rx.

THE MISSING LINK
Agatha Christie meets online casino in Net game

How do you get non-gamers to log on and play -- and pay? Appeal to their gray matter, and offer them some green matter. MindQuest Entertainment hopes to draw people who'd rather use their heads than their joysticks when they go gaming. The Net startup is launching a mystery game, and if you're the Sherlock who solves it first, you could win as much as $250,000. If dismembering people, running down pedestrians or seeing your initials on a game scoreboard are your idea of "getting game," get a clue, and stay away from this contest.
