LEAD STORY
Red Hat chief: Linux will take desktop market share from MS  (SearchWin2000.com)
The penguin wants to waddle onto your desktop. The head of Red Hat Linux claims that there's a future for open-source on the desktop -- and his company is going for it ("it" being both the gold and Microsoft's throat). He also downplayed a recent IDC study, co-sponsored by Microsoft, which gave the TCO edge to Windows.

Judge likes Sun's Java-in-XP idea (Reuters)
Sun may be breaking through a little bit. The company's latest bid to force Microsoft to include Java software in Windows XP did not get shot down the way it did in Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's courtroom. Judge J. Frederick Motz, who's hearing Sun's antitrust case against MS, said that the Java inclusion proposal may be an "attractive remedy." The case continues this week.

THE MISSING LINK
Car won't start? Check your tot's tummy

If bizarre stories were movies, this one would win the Oscar. When a lady from London couldn't get her car started after a shopping trip, she called for help. A policeman arrived to try to figure out why her Ford was on the fritz. He deduced that the problem was with the fuel tank -- her one-year-old son Oscar's fuel tank. Evidently the tot had been sucking on the keys and had swallowed a small security chip needed for the car to start. Just for the heck of it, Mom held Oscar in her lap, pressed his belly against the steering wheel and, whadaya know, the car started right up. Oscar is fine with no bellyaches to speak of. The chip, which was later recovered from his diaper, still works.
