LEAD STORY
Don't call it Windows .NET Server 2003 anymore  (CNET)
It's true -- Microsoft has yanked ".NET" from Windows .NET Server 2003. It's now called Windows Server 2003. A Gartner analyst says this is Microsoft's way of stemming confusion caused by the over-used and often confusing .NET moniker. The product will carry a ".NET Connected" brand. MS also announced that the product will be launched April 24 in San Francisco.

Warning to Microsoft: "Fear the penguin" (vnunet)
Blue Oyster Cult told us, "Don't Fear the Reaper." Goldman-Sachs tells Microsoft, "Do fear the penguin." The investment bankers did a study on open-source and concluded that Linux is poised to become a major, even dominant player in corporate IT infrastructures. The study is actually called "Fear the penguin," and Goldman Sachs thinks Microsoft, Sun, IBM and HP have the most to fear.

ASK LAURA HUNTER
Local workstations won't validate to the server
Dear Laura:
Regarding a question posed on August 26, Can I get away with not enabling Active Directory?, I tried your solution, which was to NOT install Active Directory and set up local accounts on the server against which to validate. I tried this but I couldn't figure out how to get other workstations to validate against anything other than the local workstation accounts. How do I tell the local workstations to validate against the server instead?

THE MISSING LINK
Bill Gates wants your time, money

Cynics might say that Microsoft is trying to monopolize your wrist. Those who see the world through more rose-colored Windows might say it's about time. They're both right. Gates and company have unveiled smart watches that go where no Rolex has gone before. These timepieces not only tell time, they tell news, weather, traffic -- pretty much anything you want to know thanks to an FM radio system Microsoft developed. The live connection will also keep the watches on exact atomic time and automatically update them to new time zones. Cost? Anywhere from $200 to $1,000. Ability to look more like Dick Tracy? Priceless.
