Microsoft cracks open code for governments (Reuters)
Microsoft is coughing up some code, but for certain eyes only. The company plans to open up source code to governments and international organizations. MS calls this Windows "glasnost" its Government Security Program -- the aim is to let governments and government agencies shore up software security. NATO and Russia are going to be part of the program.

My Windows XP Professional PC seems to take a long time to boot up -- around three minutes. I only see the message "Loading personal settings." After it boots, everything is fine and running extremely well. Is there something that our network administrators can do to correct this problem? We are on an NT network.

Pop-up ads are the gnats of the Net -- everyone wants to swat them. So why are so many of us reading them? Believe it or not, this reviled form of advertising -- which has turned the mildest-mannered men and women into mouse-mashing pop-up killers -- seems to work! A new study has found that more people click on pop-ups than banner ads. This is bad news if you're hoping pop-ups' unpopularity portends their demise. In fact, there's a new type of ad that clicks through to the advertiser's site when you move your mouse over it. Ugh!
