Worms off to fast start in 2003 (SearchSecurity.com)
Sobig is the third worm to make headway on the Internet and local network shares this year, making for a hectic January after a pretty passive year for malicious code in 2002. Enterprises have a large role in stopping many of these worms in their tracks because companies are finally stripping non-essential executable file attachments at the e-mail gateway.

Firewalls may not keep .NET Web services safe (CW360)
Security firm Internet Security Systems (ISS) is warning companies considering Web services based on Microsoft's .NET Framework that their existing firewalls may not offer sufficient protection. According to ISS, because .NET communicates over port 80, which is frequently targeted by hackers, it could provide a gateway for attackers to communicate with .NET application servers.

Problems resolving to ISP's DNS server
Dear Tony:
I have a Windows 2000 Server running Active Directory and DNS. We have our DNS server configured to forward to the ISP's DNS servers. All of our clients are XP Pro. The clients' DNS is pointed at my Windows 2000 server. Everything is working great except we can't get to our Web site. I suspect it has something to do with my DNS server because I can point my client DNS directly to the ISP's DNS servers and I can get to the site.

IT manager buried under a quarter million e-mails
![]()
Feeling over spammed? Can it! One IT manager doesn't want to hear your bellyaching. When he got back to the office after the holidays, he found 262,977 servings of spam -- all sent between Dec. 20 and Jan. 2. Seasons greetings! Hormel Foods hasn't seen that much spam. The inbox was so inundated that it took about 10 working days and some outside help to junk all that junk mail. The Exchange server could probably use a little counseling and a massage. The company has since gotten some filtering software. Good idea!
