Remember that infomercial about the miracle kitchen gadget that sliced and diced and chopped and grated? I think it even cut several layers of steel. Well, SearchWin2000.com's white paper section kind of reminds me of that appliance. The section is jam packed with expert-written papers about pretty much anything your IT-minded, ah, mind can come up with.

There are papers on Active Directory, Exchange.NET, migration, security and systems management. But we get even more specific, too. Need to bone up on clustering? How about VPNs or PKI or XML?

The moral of the story is that we have over 400 white papers on a wide variety of topics, all sliced and diced into an easy-to-find format that will give you the knowledge you need to do your job. But, frankly, we can never have enough. If you have access to or have found some white papers that you would like to share with your fellow site members, pass them along. (Stipulation alert: they have to be free.) Also, is there a particular area that we have left uncovered in our perpetual hunt for white papers? Tell me which subject you'd like to see on our site. I'm always open to your ideas and suggestions..

    G'bye Exchange 5.5. Now what?
    by Marilyn Cohodas, Site Editor
With mainstream support for Exchange 5.5 drawing to a close, now is the time to start reviewing your messaging options. There's Exchange 2000, Exchange Server 2003, Domino -- even Oracle is readying a new product that will be priced to attract Microsoft customers. What's a Windows shop to do in the face of all this choice? Sort out the alternatives by reading this week's featured topic.

    Site Exclusives:
    >> Microsoft releases SP1 for MOM
Microsoft has released the first service pack for the MOM server management software along with more than two dozen other tweaks. The company says what you get in SP1 is critical, but not all admins agree.
    >> Remote management shrinks the globe
Stand-alone remote Windows management tools can save IT pros hours of labor and their bosses thousands of dollars in travel bills. Three pros tell us what software they use -- not pcAnywhere -- and why.
    >> More IT managers look to virtualization for real savings
Servers are like dogs -- they need lots of "care and feeding" over their lifetimes. But there is one advantage servers have over Schnauzers and Saint Bernards -- virtualization software. More IT managers are looking to it to save money.
