MS CERTIFICATION: WINDOWS 2000 OR SERVER 2003? | by Ed Tittel

In the wake of Microsoft's recent reversal of its "mix'n'match"
strategy on Windows 2000 exams versus Windows Server 2003 exams (and
presumably Windows XP for the desktop), lots of readers have e-mailed
me to ask: "Should I get certified on Windows 2000 exams sooner, or
wait and get certified on next-generation Windows Server 2003 exams?"
Any time we're on the cusp of changes in Windows certifications
programs, this question pops up, and it's always a good one. Here are
some facts that will help put new exam availability in context.

TO SPECIALIZE OR NOT? IT ALL DEPENDS, EXPERTS SAY | by Rod Trent

In a world of cutbacks, downsizing, layoffs and generally bad
economic mojo, life as an IT professional can be hard to navigate.
There comes a time in every IT professional's life when deciding the
next steps in an ever-evolving career is a tough prospect. But unless
you evolve, you're stuck with the same job responsibilities you had
two years ago.

WHY MCSES TAKE THE AD DESIGN EXAM | by Ed Tittel

Everybody who pursues an MCSE knows that in addition to the "Core 4"
exams -- those exams on Windows XP or 2000 Professional (70-270 and
70-210 respectively), Windows 2000 Server (70-215), Windows 2000
Network Infrastructure (70-216) and Windows 2000 Directory Services
Infrastructure (70-217) -- there's another category of required exams
called the Core Design exams. After finishing the Core 4, candidates
must choose and pass one design exam, plus two electives, to earn an
MCSE.

WHAT'S THE MINIMUM PASSING SCORE FOR 70-216? | Ask Ed Tittel

Dear Ed:
Any idea what the minimum passing score is for MCSE Track Exam
70-216? I've been studying like crazy because somebody told me that
the minimum had been raised to 850/1000. I've been getting really
frustrated with my studying, because I seem to be hitting about 800
on the practice exams no matter how hard I try. Has the minimum score
really been raised to 850? And, if not, what is it currently?

SHORTCUT TO ANYWHERE | Know-IT-All Quiz #19

Test your knowledge with this week's quiz, then visit the list of
related information you'll find on the answer page.

Despite Win2k's graphical shell, there are many administrators who
are more comfortable with a command line. They would rather bang a
few keys to get their favorite programs to come up rather than
navigate through a nest of menus and submenus. The easiest way to
accomplish this is to:

a. Place shortcuts to your favorite executables on your desktop
b. Edit your process configurations in the task manager
c. Store commonly used program paths in the registry
d. Configure Windows "hotkeys" in the Control Panel
e. Cut through the corner gas station
