Microsoft working on a smaller Small Business Server? (CRN)
It looks like Microsoft might let the Bobcat out of the bag at a pretty affordable price. The company reportedly is working on a version of Small Business Server (code-named "Bobcat") that would sell for less than $1,000 and come with Windows Server 2003, Titanium and SharePoint Team Services.

Patch installation issues may have abetted Slammer (eWEEK)
Why was Slammer so darn nasty? Maybe because the patch to caulk SQL Server was so hard and time-intensive to install that DBAs didn't install it at all. Other users, especially those using the Microsoft Desktop Engine, may not have known they needed the patch, which was shipped last month with SQL Server SP3.

11% They're delivering, but I can't keep up with the patches. Help!

ASK LAURA HUNTER
What tuning features are available for TCP/IP?
Dear Laura:
What tuning features are available for TCP/IP? We have been using NetBEUI for very large, deep directory searches with very good access times. When we change the default protocol to TCP/IP, the search times increase very noticeably. We know NetBEUI is going away and we need to be able to tune TCP/IP for faster file access. Thanks.

Out of the Loop: Microsoft, premier maker of worm food
![]()
Worms love the apples that come from Washington state, but their love of Redmond's rich fruit is lusty enough to make Granny Smith blush. SQL Server proved "good eats" for the Slammer worm and proved that Microsoft is indeed one of America's premier providers of worm food.
