PRIVILEGE GRANTS THROUGH THE COMMAND LINE | by Adesh Rampat

A Windows security administrator will likely use the GUI to handle
granting privileges to the users of his network. However, there are
times that the command line is faster and easier, so it's a good idea
to know at least some basic command-line commands that you can use to
administer security in your domain.

USER PASSWORD SECURITY: FAKE THEM OUT | by Deb Landrum

When users complain about having to use strong passwords, try
suggesting that they create 'fake you out' reminders. This means
keeping a notes near their desks that looks like nothing more than a
benign personal reminder. Within the seemingly mundane notes,
however, are hidden their passwords -- available until your users are
confident that they've committed them to memory.

TOUGH TIMES REQUIRE SOFT SKILLS FROM SECURITY PROS | by R. Scheier

The hunkered-down economy means there's less money for information
security and less motivation on the part of users to follow security
policies. At the same time, senior management is paying more
attention than ever to security issues. The best way security
managers can help their employers and themselves, is to develop their
"soft" skills. Not "soft" as in warm and cuddly, but "soft" in that
they are harder to measure than pure technical competency and have
more to do with people and business issues than with technology. Here
are a few examples of how soft skills can help.

IS PCANYWHERE SECURE VS. TERMINAL SERVICES? | Ask Roberta Bragg

Dear Roberta:
I'm being asked, security-wise, about the differences between
utilizing pcAnywhere to remotely access servers versus Microsoft's
Terminal Services in administrative mode. Cost-wise Microsoft TSE is
in the operating system at no cost. But how secure is Remote Desktop
Protocol (RDP) when compared to pcAnywhere?

IT'S ALL GEEK TO ME | Ed Parry's Out of the Loop

I don't speak fluent Geek. A lot of Geek is Greek to me. That's why I
felt like a giddy schoolgirl upon learning that the good folks at
Microsoft have decided to send out a kinder, gentler security
bulletin -- one that isn't your Cal Tech honors graduate's security
bulletin. One that's easy for the average Joe Admin (or even Joe
Millionaire) to read, not just the average BugTraq subscriber.
