Microsoft releases security guide for Windows 2000 Server (eWEEK)
Hot off the press -- it's the first of several Microsoft "how to" guides to securing Windows machines. "Securing Windows 2000 Server" includes advice on patch management, auditing, configuration and other security-related topics. Microsoft wrote the guide based on what was learned during last year's Windows code scrub. Guides to other Windows OSes will come out later this year.

ASK LAURA HUNTER
Network ID won't work on remote Win2k laptops
Dear Laura:
I am in our main office setting up Win2000 laptops for a branch office. These laptops have a two-way trust between the two domains; however, I cannot connect to the branch when setting the network ID to theirs. I have to use our ID here. It gives me the error "no domain server available." This is only happening with Windows 2000, not Windows 98. While it will not let me connect to the branch domain this way, I CAN browse with one set up on our domain. Any suggestions?

THE MISSING LINK
The nap's almost over: New Napster to wake up

Napster's not dead. It's just napping. A new, less illegal version is about to wake up and hit the Net. The new owner, Roxio, says you'll see the nice, new Napster online by the end of the year -- just be ready to pony up some credit card info because the new service will be subscription-based. Roxio bought Napster's name and intellectual property for $5 million last year at a bankruptcy sale and hired the Sultan of Swap (and Napster's founder) Shawn Fanning to be a consultant.
