LEAD STORY
Admins mild about Microsoft's virtualization strategy  (SearchWin2000.com)
Microsoft baited the upgrade hook with its strategic purchase of virtualization technology firm Connectix. Windows admins say the Connectix connection could come in handy, but they doubt Microsoft's strategy will have them rushing to request OS purchase orders.

NEWS
Sun engages MS in price war (eWEEK)
We've got a price war going! Whatever license Microsoft has presented to a customer, Sun says it will offer its equivalent desktop solution in software for half as much money and may even wheel and deal on the server side. A Sun exec said that if you're negotiating a Software Assurance contract right now, don't buy yet -- call Sun first.

NEWS
A Microsoft markdown in Taiwan (Reuters)
Microsoft software is on sale in Taiwan. The company will mark down prices by nearly 27% in order to keep the fair trade watchdogs there happy. But wait, there's more! MS will also sell components of Office XP separately and share Windows source code with the government. Consumers on the island had complained that MS used its monopoly to inflate software prices and forced them to buy pricey software bundles rather than let them pick the items they wanted.

THE MISSING LINK
Net is still America's domain

When it comes to Web surfing, Europeans just can't hang ten with folks on the other side of the pond. Several Internet research firms found that about 66% of North Americans have Net access, while 40% of Western Europeans can easily jump online. The gap will widen to 81% to 51% within three years. The studies also found this: If you can't stand to hear people jawing on cell phones, steer clear of Italy. More than eight out of nine Italians have a mobile phone. That's about double the average of the rest of Europe.
