Quest 'bet the farm' on Microsoft's security model (SearchWin2000.com)
Quest Software made a business decision five years ago to "bet the farm" on Microsoft's security model, and so far it's paid off for the management software company, according to one of its executives. The advent of Trustworthy Computing hasn't changed that strategy, he says, because that initiative is all about customer "comfort."

Weak admin passwords blamed for rise in attacks (eWEEK)
A sharp rise in attacks on PCs running Windows 2000 and Windows XP falls squarely on the shoulders of weak administrator passwords, according to a new advisory from the CERT Coordination Center. Because many of these attacks hit home users, CERT is recommending that admins remind their home users to deploy firewalls, disable Windows file-sharing and start using stronger passwords.

German firm gives talking washing machine a spin
![]()
The pink underwear phenomenon may soon fade into the hamper of history, thanks to a wise washing machine named Hermine. This laundress is loaded with speech recognition software, so you can order her to do things like "Soak, then wash at 95 degrees, spin at 1,400 rotations and start in half an hour." Or you could just say, "Please, lady, no shrinkage, and ask the dryer to give up that other sock." Hermine also can talk -- she'll give you advice on how to get out stains ("Grape juice? Forget it!"), whether you may use bleach, and how to separate whites and colors ("Get that red sweater out of here!"). Just make sure you can speak German. A speech recognition firm in Regensburg developed Hermine and introduced her this week at Hanover's CeBIT fair.
