LEAD STORY
Economy, new VP drove System Center strategy  (SearchWin2000.com)

Driven by a need to attract customers in a sluggish economy, and with a new vice president in charge of the unit, Microsoft hatched the System Center vision. In an interview, David Hamilton, director of product management for the Windows management group, talked about the future of SMS, MOM and Application Center in this new world order in Redmond.

SOUND OFF
Linux: The right or wrong choice?
Many IT pros tell us that they've recommended Linux but that top execs vetoed Linux in favor of a "safe" option like Windows or Unix. That's what happened to the IT pro in this story.

Have you or an IT pro you know struck out with a Linux pitch? Please tell us why Linux would have been a better choice! Or, on the flip side, why are you happy that your company rejected Linux and chose Windows?

Need to respond anonymously? That's fine. Choose a pseudonym for yourself and the company involved!

THE MISSING LINK
Glitch prices handhelds at $12 each

Talk about rock-bottom prices -- Amazon.com had some iPaq Pocket PCs priced a few layers below the shale. The handhelds were listed on Amazon's U.K. site for a shade under $12. That's a savings of $437 off the regular price. But those prices didn't last long; the handhelds were trespassing in the bargain basement. Amazon discounted the discount and said that an internal snafu had plundered the price tags. The company won't honor any orders placed for $12 iPaqs.
