Microsoft may hold onto many of Windows Server 2003's new features, delivering those components over a longer period of time. Windows Server 2003 is due April 24. Analysts are behind the move, saying customers would see the value of their investment in the server go up over time as new features are available. Among the components scheduled for staggered release: Microsoft's new business-class instant messaging technology; Group Policy Management Console; collaboration tool Windows Team Services; Windows Rights Management Services (RMS); and Windows Systems Resource Manager (WSRM).

Microsoft's new commitment to systems management is about as far away from the glitz of its feature-heavy product releases as you could get. This commentary points out that Microsoft thinks system management is strategic because it is bundling basic functions that could undercut traditional management giants like HP and CA.

Built-in Win2k tools that track logon times?
Dear Serdar:
What Windows 2000 built-in tools can I use to check when a person logged in, how long the person was logged on and when the person logged off? I also have the Win2k Resource Kit, but was unable to find any tools that will give me that information.

Sorry, Charlie -- technology invades tuna privacy
![]()
That cliche just isn't true -- there are not plenty of fish in the sea. But technologists are trying to keep the tuna from floating to the top of the endangered species list. Scientists have developed a scalable (literally!) computer that they can stick inside a live yellowfin whopper. The computer then records and transmits data about the host's life and social habits. Tuna are a very private species, and these techno tunas (the big ones that can't get away) will transmit data that researchers can use to advise the fishing industry on ways to keep the schools swimming. Overfishing is a concern because tuna have such a special place in the hearts, palates, pantries and casseroles of so many humans.
