Bug in Windows RPC leads to DoS attack (InfoWorld)
Microsoft is warning Windows NT4, 2000 and XP users of a vulnerability in the Remote Procedure Call protocol that could allow an attacker to cause the networking services on the system to fail. RPC allows applications on a computer to call applications on another machine in a network. Attackers would need to send a malformed request to the RPC endpoint mapper, which listens on TCP/IP port 135 and is generally accessible from within a company network but typically blocked for external traffic by a firewall, mitigating the risk of an attack from the Internet, Microsoft said. Microsoft has a patch available for Windows 2000 and XP, but not for NT4 because of changes in RPC since NT4 was released.

Software meets flatware for IT students

When you think of a geek's dining habits (if you ever think of a geek's dining habits), a sack from Burger King probably comes to mind -- a sack smeared with ketchup and crumpled on the floor. Software hounds may know their code, but not all of them know the code of conduct when it comes to dining. That's why IT students at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., are learning about class in class. Students at the university's School of Information Technology and Engineering learn dining etiquette, including how to use a fork, butter bread and hold a wine glass. This way, the students will be ready should they have to leave their terminals for a business dinner, and they'll never order red wine with their Filet-O-Fish.
