    The lowdown on licensing changes
    by Catherine Ketcher, Site Editor

Microsoft is overhauling its licensing program to include more support and services. Some think it's a good move. Others just appreciate the gesture. And several think Microsoft just doesn't get it -- is it simply too little too late? We've collected some info to help you decide for yourself.

    Site Exclusives:
    >> Microsoft buys its way into antivirus fray
Microsoft signed an agreement this week to acquire the intellectual property and technology assets of GeCAD Software Srl, a software company based in Bucharest, Romania. This antivirus technology will eventually evolve into a fee-based service on future Windows platforms.
    >> Oops! True IT blooper #104: Partial plug-in equals partial power
When all else fails, remember to jiggle the cord. An IT specialist learns that partial power is a possibility in the Blooper Zone.
    >> Three phases for patch management
When Nimda gave WorldCom a call in 2001, the company developed a patch management strategy -- no easy task for a firm with 28,800 Windows workstations and 1,200 Windows servers.

    Tip of the Week:
Rumors about Microsoft security certifications have been rife for nearly two years now. But at TechEd in Dallas, Microsoft finally unveiled its security cert plans. Its new certification involves two new security specializations, available as part of the current Windows 2000 MCSA and MCSE tracks. These new tracks effectively spin existing programs and exams into new credentials for security-minded Windows IT professionals.
