I hope you have your thinking caps on today, because, as an introduction to our wonderful new IT glossary, we are offering you a quick challenge. Below are the definitions of three commonly used terms that should be familiar to any IT pro who works with Windows. Test your IT vocabulary by looking at the definitions below and then clicking on the answer link at the end of each one. Read carefully. This test is trickier than you might think!
    1. This is a Microsoft Windows program interface that enables you to send e-mail from within a Windows application and attach the document you are working on to the e-mail note. Applications that take advantage of this technology include word processors, spreadsheets and graphics applications. Applications that are compatible with it typically include a Send Mail or Send in the File pulldown menu of the application. (Answer)

    2. In computers, this is a collection of small programs, any of which can be called when needed by a larger program that is running in the computer. The small program that lets the larger program communicate with a specific device such as a printer or scanner is often packaged as one of these programs. The ones that support specific device operation are know as device drivers. (Answer)

    3. This is a feature included in Microsoft's Windows 2000 server that allows network administrators to install the Windows 2000 Professional operating system and its upgrades to any number of client computers at one time from a centralized location. If the client computer is connected to the server through a LAN, the computer's hardware will find it and request a copy of the operating system. (Answer)

I hope you enjoyed this week's fun fact challenge. We'll be including mini vocab quizzes in all our newsletters in the coming week, so stay tuned. And, if you don't see a word in our glossary during your travels on the site, please let us know and we will promptly add it. Have a great week, everyone!

    Regards,
    Christine

    Site Exclusives:
    >> IT managers doubt prediction of Windows dominance
Windows is going to be a dominant server platform in the data center within the next five years. Surprised? Maybe not. Appalled? If you're a data center manager dealing with issues such as security and availability -- probably.

    >> Get Windows 9x to play nice with Windows 2000/XP
We've taken pity on you poor souls out there that still have to administer Windows 9x workstations -- and there sure seem to be a lot of you! In this two-part article, our experts answer your questions on managing the inevitable migration and maintenance issues that arise in a mixed Windows desktop environment.

    >> Oops! True IT blooper #105: Too clean for comfort
Is it possible to take your workplace sanitation to excess? In this true IT blooper, an office in Quebec accidentally threw their backup out with the bathwater.

    Tip of the Week:
Enable 802.1x security in Windows 2000
While Win2k drivers exist for 802.1x wireless hardware, Windows does not natively support 802.1x security protocols. This is a problem for administrators who want to use Win2k clients in a secured 802.11 environment. Sometimes the only way to do this is to use a third-party security solution. Unfortunately, if different machines are using different manufacturer's hardware, the key lengths are often incompatible.
