YOU'LL WANT TO PERFORM THIS WIN2K UPGRADE | by Serdar Yegulalp

XP Professional is turning up on more and more corporate desktops as
the successor to Windows 9x and Windows 2000 Professional. While XP
Pro is designed to be managed by Windows 2000 Server and Active
Directory, there's often a crucial element missing: support on the
Windows 2000 Server side for new Windows XP-only group policy
functions.

WHY MIGHT YOU MOVE YOUR SYSTEM FILES? | IT Challenge

By default, Win2k system files are installed to a folder named
\WINNT. Legitimate reasons for specifying a different folder to
install these system files into during setup might include:

a. A security measure to fool "exploits" looking for system files
b. A requirement for a parallel "existing version" install
c. Targeting a different, specific folder for disaster recovery
d. All of the above
e. Only a and b
f. Tricking your PC into thinking it's a Mac

A VIRTUAL MS CLUSTER WITHOUT SHARED HARDWARE | by Holger Zirnstein

Do you need to install an MS cluster for testing, evaluation or
education, yet you have no hardware for implementing the shared
storage? A user recommends a useful how-to for using VMware virtual
machine software.

USE A REMOTE DESKTOP FOR ADMINISTRATION | by Barrie Sosinsky

If you're a Windows XP Pro user, you'll find it offers a feature
called Remote Desktop that is based on Terminal Services. Using
Remote Desktop you can log onto a system from another machine and
access your applications and files as if you were sitting there in
front of the system locally. It is particularly helpful for
administrators who want to change server settings; add, modify, or
delete users and computers; open a Command Prompt box to enter CLI
commands; and even reboot a system, remotely.

HOW CAN I BEST TROUBLESHOOT PCS REMOTELY? | Ask Jerry Honeycutt

Dear Jerry:
I administer multiple computers with multiple OSes. I waste a lot of
my time either moving to the site or, once there, realizing that I
was misinformed about the problem and must return later with the
appropriate tools, software, etc. I would like to be able to open a
connection to user desktops and be able to coach them in the process.

DNSLINT TO THE RESCUE | Exclusive Article

A lot can go wrong with Active Directory if you don't have a
correctly configured DNS infrastructure. What you need is a tool that
can assess the current DNS configuration of a domain controller or
member server, compare it with the required configuration, and make
suggestions about how to correct any problems. And when things go
wrong, you need a tool that points out the problem quickly. Windows
Server 2003 Support Tools has just such a tool. It's called DNSLint.

As we began to receive nominees for this year's Windows Manageability
Innovator Award, it became apparent we had a long review process
ahead of us. There were many to choose from, and all were worthy of a
shot at the award. We finally picked Todd Myrick and his project team
at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) because of the enormous
scale of their undertaking and the significant results they achieved.
