IT SURVIVAL KIT
Shoot the messenger
Alas, it's amazing how good ideas get subverted, thanks to those who seek nefarious ways to reach out through the Internet to users' desktops. Hence this sad tale of the Messenger Service -- whose output appears in pop-up windows on the desktop labeled "Messenger Service" in their title bars -- which is the bane of Windows users everywhere, especially at big connectivity portals like MSN or AOL. This tip will show you how to fight back.

ASK JERRY HONEYCUTT
Protecting folders on shared computer
Dear Jerry:
I'm using Windows 2000 Pro, and I would like to set user profiles so that one user cannot access another user's files. But even when I make a user a "guest," he can still go into the documents and settings folder and access another user's personal files. How do I make it so multiple users can use the same computer but not have access to each other's files?

THE MISSING LINK
Brits finally give geeks their due

A new vat of verbiage has been poured into the mainstream. The latest edition of the Oxford Dictionary of English now includes the likes of "cyberslacker" (someone who spends all day on the Web), "data smog" (the confusion that comes from too much information online) and "egosurfing" (Googling yourself). And believe it or not, the very cornerstones of geekspeak -- "geek" and "nerd" -- had been left out of previous Oxford lexicons, but the new version gives them some definition.
