Microsoft quietly joins antivirus business (BusinessWeek)
Microsoft is quietly getting into the antivirus software business. Earlier this month, the company bought the technology assets of the Romanian company GeCAD Software. Industry watchers say Microsoft will bundle that security software into Longhorn, Redmond's next version of its Windows operating system, which is expected to be released in either 2005 or 2006.

WEBCAST
Mark Minasi on NT 4.0 -- hold 'em or fold 'em?
It's the beginning of the end for Windows NT. Or at least Microsoft says so. But in the wake of the release of Windows Server 2003 -- and with nearly half of the installed enterprise Windows base still running NT4 -- we asked supreme Alpha geek Mark Minasi to share his views on when an operating system as popular as NT 4.0 truly becomes obsolete. Hear Minasi discuss how to decide when -- or if -- to leave NT 4.0; the security hole that might just FORCE you to leave NT 4.0; and pointers for making upgrades cheaper and easier (if you decide to move).

IT SURVIVAL KIT
More RPC attacks imminent for Windows platforms
When Microsoft released the first warning about RPC vulnerabilities on July 16, it took virus writers about a month to get the first version of the Blaster worm onto the wires. By mid-September, we've seen six or more variants of the Blaster worm. In addition, the Welchia and Nachi worms have exploited the same vulnerability. See what we've learned from the recent attacks and how these lessons can protect us now.

THE MISSING LINK
Has the e-mail backlash begun?

When British carmaker Mini began its push in the U.S., its motto was "The SUV backlash officially starts now." Now it appears a U.K. mobile phone retailer is leading the e-mail backlash. The CEO of Phones 4U Ltd. has banned e-mail from his 2,500-employee company. But he doesn't see his order as a ban -- he thinks he's freed his staff from their computer captors. John Caudwell said that he got tired of seeing his staff spend hours in front of their computers; he would rather they interact with colleagues and customers in the flesh or, of course, on the phone. Now all we need is for a PC maker to ban cell phones.
