Security report puts blame on Microsoft (The Washington Post)
A new research report says that as long as Microsoft remains the world's dominant software provider, there will be no way to stem the increasing tide of Internet viruses and worms. The report released today was the work of several corporate technology executives and researchers. The report's authors also recommend that governments force Microsoft to reveal more of its Windows code so that better security tools can be developed.

IT SURVIVAL KIT
Add a right click command-line prompt
If a user types "CMD" in Windows 2000 to open a command-line prompt (CLI), the CLI opens in the documents and settings subfolder for the currently logged-in user. However, this isn't the most convenient place to start a CLI. Learn a hidden way to enable a right-click context menu option and launch a CLI from a a Windows 2000 folder.

ASK SERDAR YEGULALP
Users can't access Office 2000 in XP Pro
Dear Serdar:
After I upgraded Win2000 to XP Pro, when I log into the computer as administrator, I can use any part of Office 2000. If anyone else logs onto that computer, they can't use any part of Office. It asks for the CD. I put the CD in, and it says it can't find the data file it asks for, but it is on the CD. I can see it there. I have given people admin rights, and they still cannot use Office. How can I fix this?

THE MISSING LINK
No batteries, no electricity, no problem

Here's a whole new take on the crank call. A company in Japan has cranked out a mobile phone charger that would make the Professor on "Gilligan's Island" proud: a charger that requires no electricity and no batteries. Just elbow grease. You turn a crank on the handheld generator for five minutes, and it gives your cell phone 20 minutes of battery power. It's a great thing to have in an emergency -- say in the event you're shipwrecked on a desert isle after a three-hour tour, and there isn't a plug within 1,000 miles.
