For good reason, the recent news about Software Update Services has struck a chord with SearchWin2000.com readers. This utility, which helps IT admin download critical updates and now service packs, comes bundled in Windows. It's catching on with customers, and based on a high volume of response to our SUS coverage, it appears that customers want to know more about Microsoft's plans for SUS.

As we've reported, the beta program for SUS 2.0 has been delayed slightly. Customers are excited about this release because it will allow patching for Microsoft applications as opposed to just the Windows platform. Microsoft has yet to offer a reason or length of time for the delay, and it's unclear if they will.

Of course SUS is only one of a number of technologies that help protect customers against vulnerabilities. Some other resources include Windows Update, Office Update, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer, and of course, Systems Management Server, which is a full blown software distribution and management platform.

Which of these tools do you use the most and which perform to your satisfaction? We'd also like to know what sort of features or enhancements you'd like to see added to Microsoft's security arsenal.

Site Exclusives: Update on Software Update Services
First the good news: Windows customers can now use Software Update Services -- Microsoft's freebie patch management application -- to distribute service packs. The bad news is that the beta for a new and improved SUS has been postponed. The eagerly awaited SUS 2.0, which is due out in late 2003, will be expanded from just patching Windows to patching all products, such as Office, SQL Server and Exchange. For details, read these three SearchWin2000.com stories:

    >> Beta for SUS 2.0 on hold for now
The beta trial for Microsoft's Software Update Services 2.0 has been briefly delayed. In an e-mail to customers, Microsoft offered some hints about its plans for the Windows patch management application.

    >> Microsoft tool learns new patching trick
Microsoft has given IT managers a speedier way to get their patches installed by making it possible to use an existing Windows utility to deliver and deploy service packs.

    >> Windows service pack tool draws early praise
Windows customers say they were pleased to learn that they can now use Software Update Services (SUS) to distribute service packs, but many say they wish Microsoft had given them advance notice of the new capabilities.

Tip of the Week: XP Professional deployment options
Windows XP Professional has some nice new features, not the least of which is a smooth upgrade process. However, in the business enterprise there is never a substitute for proper planning and testing. Here are some things to consider before moving forward.
