by Marilyn Cohodas, Senior Site Editor

How does a technical publication -- on-line or off -- know what kind of articles readers want to read? We get our ideas from many sources: you, other publications, our site experts, conferences, vendors and whatever "buzz" we pick up from the general marketplace. At SearchWin2000.com, we've added another element to our editorial planning -- an advisory board.

We selected our five technical mentors -- Lee Benjamin, Larry Duncan, Peter Osbourne, Doug Spindler and Rick Zach -- because they are leaders in enterprise IT either by dint of their job title, their ties to user groups or as professional consultants. Their impressive credentials span the gamut of Windows technology from Active Directory to Exchange, SMS and SUS, all the way to the cutting edge of SOAP and XML.

We'll meet "officially" a couple of times a year and stay in close touch on a regular basis to gather feedback on existing content and bounce around new ideas. The result of this ongoing dialog will be more incisive coverage of critical technical topics. If you have some thoughts on what those topics should be, or want to contact individual board members directly, you can write to us, and we will forward your letters along.

    This Week: Exclusive articles
    >> Massachusetts budget czar bullish on open-source
Sounding more like the CEO of a startup company than a government cabinet officer, Massachusetts' top budget official said a new policy to adopt open-source software and standards for state agencies whenever possible will save money and position the state as a model for governments nationwide.
    >> Windows tool set allows workgroup collaboration
Microsoft's strategy to build a rich client using its Office System took a step forward with the release of Windows SharePoint Services, a part of Windows Server 2003 that lets users publish content on the Web.
    >> Software-license pros emerge as a new IT breed
Microsoft's switch to an annuity licensing program more than a year ago coincided with -- and contributed to -- some fundamental changes in the way IT departments purchase software. This article is third in a series on Microsoft licensing.

    Tip of the Week:
It's possible to run a program from another user's context, but the way Windows 2000 and XP Professional implement this feature requires that the user know the password for the other account. This makes it difficult to run the program securely. Learn about the solution, which involves the use of Windows Script Host to create a script that can run the program in the appropriate context and provide the password non-interactively.
    >> Some help with RunAs
