One of the features of Microsoft's new security initiative is a move toward a monthly patch cycle. No more guessing when the next patch will be released. No more chasing your tail with a seemingly endless stream of individual patches.
The new program was spelled out recently by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at his company's Worldwide Partner Conference.
The only exception to the rule is in the event that an emergency crops up. When that happens, Microsoft will issue a special alert. And lo and behold, just such a case occurred recently, with Redmond sounding the alarm about four critical Windows vulnerabilities, and one for Exchange 2000.
Being the curious type, I'm interested to know how this policy is being received by the folks in Windows shops. Does once-a-month patching work for you? Take SearchWin2000.com's new poll on the subject or send me an e-mail with your thoughts.
Have a great week.

A SearchWin2000.com member writes, "We have installed a second Terminal Server on the network. Clients usually connect to TS through a VPN. Some clients can connect to both Terminal Servers and some can connect only to the old TS. It seems to me that some client boxes are not able to connect to the new TS. Any idea why?"

| Tip of the Week: |
| This past April, Microsoft and practice test provider MeasureUp rolled out free skills assessments on four major Windows Server 2003 related exam areas. Since it's been a little over six months since the debut of these self-assessments, I did some follow-up to get a sense of how they're doing. I learned that site visitors have taken a huge number of self-assessments -- over 150,000 -- and that the program has been pretty darn successful. |
