However, once you've tested a given fix and found it to be working perfectly, you can either move or delete the backup files. Over time, the accumulation of backup files can put a dent in the free space the system directory uses. If you want to free up this space, here are some options. >> CLICK for the full tip: http://www.searchWin2000.com/tip/1,289483,sid1_gci933793,00.html?track=NL-120 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= KEEP THE CORE SYSTEM IN RAM | by Matthew Laccetti If you have a considerable amount of RAM in your system -- 512 MB or more -- you can improve system performance by preventing the operating system from sending user-mode and kernel-mode drivers, as well as kernel-mode system code, to the paging file. You can do so by changing a setting in the registry. >> CLICK for the full tip: http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid1_gci924503,00.html?track=NL-120&FromTaxonomy=/pr/5e3 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SYSTEM.CED IS MISSING? PROBABLY NOT | by Serdar Yegulalp When Windows 2000 and Windows XP (both Home and Professional) begin the boot process, a 16 MB memory space is allocated for loading components needed for booting. These components include the boot loader, the kernel, the HAL, the drivers needed for booting and the System registry hive. If the hive exceeds 13 MB in size, for whatever reason, Windows will fail to boot and generate the following error: "Windows could not start because \Winnt\System32\Config\System.ced is missing or corrupt." Here's the real story behind this error. >> CLICK for the full tip: http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid1_gci932015,00.html?track=NL-120&FromTaxonomy=/pr/5e3 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= WHERE ARE WINDOWS XP UNATTEND.TXT SETTINGS? | Ask Jerry Honeycutt Dear Jerry: We are in the beginning phase of doing a desktop upgrade to Windows XP. I have been looking for a complete list of settings for unattend.txt, and I can't find one. I would like to know all of the components that I can turn off and if there are ways to set the desktop to Windows Classic along with setting the Control Panel to classic view. I'm trying to minimize the training for our users. >> CLICK for Jerry Honeycutt's expert response: http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/ateQuestionNResponse/0,289625,sid1_cid555407_tax293054,00.html?track=NL-120 Want more tips like this one?
