THE REAL FIREWALL STRATEGY | By Tom Lancaster

Microsoft's latest strategy for security advises "use an Internet
firewall." The company then suggests using a "hardware" or "software"
firewall. So, which one of the two should you choose?
The answer is both, and here's why.

EASY FIREWALL TESTING | By Tom Lancaster

Microsoft's Windows NT/2k/XP contain a service called Simple TCP/IP
Services, and when enabled, this service enables the Echo, Character
Generator, Discard, and Quote of the Day programs. But while these
programs were popular a decade ago, they are considered a security
risk today, almost always disabled and often not even installed.
However, that doesn't mean they aren't useful. One particularly
useful thing you can use them for is to test a firewall.

GOT ANY MALICIOUS CODE? | By Tim Fenner

There are a number of anti-adware and anti-spyware programs that you
can install which will keep an eye on your computer and inform you
when a known-bad program attempts to install itself. But often in
this escalating battle, the unwanted programs are still able to sneak
through, undetected by your guardian software. I've been able to
discover many of these using a very simple tool: Windows System
Information.

TACKLING VPN SECURITY WITHOUT FIREWALLS | Ask Robert Bragg

Dear Roberta:
With this latest round of worms it became apparent that our biggest
exposure was NOT our front door (the firewall), but rather the back
door (laptops brought in from vendors/home, VPN users without
firewalls). How are most organizations tackling the issue of
protecting those devices? We've tried to mandate antivirus software
and firewalls, but how can we technically force compliance?

SECURING PUBLIC COMPUTERS WITH LOOPBACK PROCESSING | Article

Sometimes, your computers need to be put in a place where the public
can freely access them. Unfortunately, sometimes when you let a user
near a public computer, technical mishaps can cause serious problems
for your administrator. Believe it or not, there is a way to help
alleviate this problem in Windows 2000 group policies, and it's
called loopback processing.
