Customer demand for SUS is so strong that Microsoft delayed testing of a new version of the Windows utility to make it a formal beta program. A Microsoft executive says SUS 2.0 will sport four major improvements over the current version.

NEWS
Windows XP Service Pack 2 nears beta (TechWeb)
Service Pack 2 for Windows XP will be released for beta testing in the next few weeks, according to a published report. The new service pack, which some are describing as a major overhaul for the desktop system, was originally scheduled for release early next year. Among the features in SP2 are combined fixes for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express and an enhanced version of Windows Update.

NEWS
Microsoft to revamp Windows security (eWEEK)
Microsoft will release a series of service packs over the next six months that are designed to provide tighter security for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Windows clients will also be made more secure by turning off a greater number of services by default, Microsoft says. Among the security efforts is the first service pack for Windows Server 2003. Due to go to beta early next year, the release is expected to give administrators the ability to check every device attempting to connect to a network to flag possible system intrusions.

THE MISSING LINK
Geek freaks, rages against the spam machine

From the state that gave us road rage comes "spam rage." It was bound to happen sometime. A computer programmer in California got so tired of being slammed by spam and pop-ups promising to enhance his physical, um, shortcomings that he actually did something about it. He responded in unkind -- threatening to torture, maim and kill the spammers. That didn't go over too well with police; the inbox vigilante's rage could cost him five years in prison and $250,000.
