Desperate situations sometimes require desperate measures, but is there a point at which the remedy can be worse than the problem? That may be the case for some organizations fed up with spam.

Recently, antivirus software maker Symantec Corp. funded a survey of 500 small businesses about the exponential growth of junk e-mails. Not surprisingly, a large majority said the problem has spiked in the past few months. And about 40% said that at least half of the e-mails that come through their mail servers are spam messages.

Respondents' frustration levels are certainly understandable, but many of these small companies said they were disgusted enough that they would consider shutting down their e-mail systems altogether and return to snail mail for their correspondence.

For IT admins in large enterprises, this isn't an option, of course. But isn't there just a tiny part of you that says, "Wouldn't my life be a whole lot easier without e-mail?"
